What is the Mood Switch? How does it work?
Like many people, you may have believed that negative feelings, such as anxiety, anger, and worry result from bad things you’ve experienced. Look at the difference one thought makes…
Imagine you are driving down the freeway, obeying all the rules and driving safely. Suddenly a car swerves in front of you, missing your front bumper by inches, giving you a surge of adrenaline. You might think: “What a jerk! He could have killed me! Why are people so stupid. Where are the police when you need them. Why does this always happen to me? Now I’m angry and I’m going to be off my game at the client meeting I’m going to, all because of that horrible, inconsiderate driver!”
Now you are angry about your day being ruined, upset that drivers are not more considerate, etc.
On the other hand, you might think: “Wow! That was close! I got out of that without a scratch. Thank goodness! It must my lucky day! Great – I bet that luck will make this client meeting go my way, too. I can’t wait to close the deal.”
Now you are in an upbeat, positive, confident mood.
There is no difference in what actually happened in both cases. There is no difference in the surge of adrenaline. The only difference is what you think “about” the event – after the event.
Research has shown that most bad feelings come from illogical thoughts about what has happened to you
